Eve teasing: a fast growing problem in today’s society

When we send our girls, daughters, sisters out today for different reasons, are we truly confident and have a feeling of security about their safe journey, which may just be a 5-10 minute walk to the  grocer’s? For more than 90% of the people, the answer is a ‘no’. After a few bitter experiences, I, a teen-aged girl, agree with those 90% of the people. I would like to share some personal experiences with the readers.

“Be careful and don’t forget to give me a call as soon as you reach, OK?”, with a reconfirming nod and a thumbs up gesture, I bid my mother goodbye as I left for my friend’s, who stayed in the nearby colony, a twelve minutes distance on foot. It was always, literally always that I took the heavily crowded market place route to her place, owing to all those incidents of eve teasing that quite frequently took place in the relatively less busy lanes and roads. Had anybody told me it was not just about the busyness of the place that invoked men of varying age groups to commit this cheap, shameful act. I was walking, all by myself, when my cellphone rang. As I shifted my view from front to the side to reach my jeans pocket, I stepped on some vegetable peels, tripped and fell, dropping my cellphone and gaining the public attention. Feeling all embarrassed, I clumsily dusted myself and was reaching for my phone when two to three middle aged men offered to help. Though I had clearly refused, one of them was about to pick my phone up, when I grabbed it from his hands. The other two who had started dusting me were actually feeling me up! I had never felt more disgusted before. I ran as fast as I could and regained my consciousness and ability to scream and shout only after running all the way to my friend’s residence. Her parents had guessed from my expressions that something awful had happened to me. They called up my mother and then I told them of my disgusting experience of being a victim of eve teasing.

The message I would like to send across is that although we cannot change this mentality of some males, but we need to change our attitude towards this shameful act. Term it as a crime. Why do we need to wait for bigger crimes like rapes to happen by encouraging such monsters in the form of men, by letting go of them? I think this is high time our society took a sterner action against eve teasing. Providing women a secure and safe environment is essential and I believe we deserve it.

  1. True…little one! But soon, such incidents won’t even register in your mind and you will start forgetting them as soon as they happen. That’s the ‘red’ signal that you are turning into the same ‘robot’ women that we see all around us in the society.
